May 2nd has always come with big changes for me. I found out I was pregnant with my first baby on May 2nd, 2004. May 2nd, 2010 was my first day of being a full-fledged entrepreneur working for myself. And May 2nd, 2020 was the first day we began building our home. A year later – today – I sat outside reading, listening to the chorus of peepers, thoroughly enjoying a very rare and early 68-degree day. I listened to birdsong, watched spiders and bugs around me, heard the red squirrels yelling at each other. I spent the day in my own little version of heaven.
And today on May 2nd, 2021, we experienced several new-to-us firsts! We heard our first white-throated sparrow of the spring singing his song: “drink-your-tea-tea-tea-tea-tea”. We took our first outdoor shower using our Joolca (outdoor camp shower system). It was exquisitely enjoyable, after three months of simply washing up using a pan of hot water. For the very first time, we had robins on our property singing their beautiful melodic song. We saw (and I got bit by) the first mosquito of the season. And I saw this fascinating creature (I am a serious lover of almost all things six- and eight-legged). It is a boreal lightning bug larvae!
I know it looks a bit…prehistoric and foreign. It has a segmented body, and it’s eyes, and antennae are at the end of a moving “stalk” coming out of the body! Absolutely nuts looking and not at all what you’d think of when you think of a lightning bug.
Here are some of our overnight visitors:
We have several moths on or around our front door every morning. The variety and how well they blend in with certain trees is just amazing.
I can’t wait to share with you how our homestead is evolving day by day, and what we do here, what we see, smell, feel, and hear. I want to share it all with you so you, too, can be inspired to find your own bit of heaven.
